Miller Outdoor Theatre: A Guide to Free Shows in Hermann Park

Last updated: November 7, 2026

Miller Outdoor Theatre is one of our favorite places in Houston, and the best part is that every show is free. It sits in Hermann Park, with a covered seating area under its dramatic angled roof and a big grassy hill where you can spread out a blanket.

Our favorite way to go is the hill. You don't need a ticket, so just bring a blanket and a picnic and settle in on the grass in front of the stage. We especially love the free cultural events there.

Every show is free

All performances at Miller are free to attend. Donations are welcome, but you don't need to pay anything to go.

The program covers a wide mix, from music and dance to theater, films, and cultural celebrations. Check the official calendar to see what's coming up.

The hill or covered seats

The easiest option is the hill in front of the stage. You don't need a ticket, and you can show up with a blanket or lawn chairs and a picnic. Facing the stage, lawn chairs go on the left side and blankets go on the right.

If you'd rather have a seat under the roof, evening shows need a ticket for the covered area. Miller's official site says those tickets are free too. They're released online starting at 10 a.m. the day before the show, and any that are left go out at the box office, which opens an hour before the performance.

With a seat ticket, get there at least 10 minutes early, because unclaimed seats can be given away at showtime. Daytime performances don't need tickets.

Bring a picnic

A picnic on the hill is part of the fun. You're allowed to bring your own food and drinks, including alcohol. Coolers are fine on the hill and in the covered area, as long as they fit under your seat.

Leave glass containers at home, because they aren't allowed in City of Houston parks. Open flames and grills aren't allowed on the hill either.

Smoking and vaping aren't allowed anywhere in Hermann Park or at Miller. Leashed pets are welcome in the park, but not in the seating area or on the hill.

Getting there and parking

The free parking lots closest to Miller are Lots A, C, F, G, and H in Hermann Park. There's also paid covered parking at the Houston Museum of Natural Science garage nearby, and accessible parking along Hermann Park Drive.

Popular shows can fill the closest lots, so give yourself extra time. The METRORail Red Line also stops near Hermann Park if you'd rather not drive.

Weather

Miller doesn't cancel shows for ordinary rain or thunderstorms. Shows are only called off for dangerous weather, such as hurricane, tropical storm, or tornado warnings.

Bring water and sun protection for daytime shows, and something to sit on if you're heading for the hill.

Accessibility

The covered area has accessible seating, and Miller suggests calling ahead to arrange it. Listening devices for guests with hearing loss are available at the Security Desk an hour before the show, with a valid Texas driver's license or state ID as a deposit. Captioned performances are marked in the calendar.

Make a day of it

Miller sits in the middle of Hermann Park, close to the Houston Zoo and the Museum District. Spend the afternoon at a museum or in the park, then stay for an evening show.
